frequently asked questions
- Q: What is the time commitment of the Review Board?
- A: It takes two to three hours during the course of a week to review a couple of articles.
- Q: What does the Review Board do?
- A: The Review Board serves to correct mistakes and improve articles. This includes everything from simple grammar and spelling errors to flaws in the scientific method or poorly-drawn conclusions. Every major science journal has a board of peer reviewers to verify articles.
- Q: Should I come to the Review Workshop?
- A: Yes, if you are available, it is very important that you attend the workshop. Our Faculty Committee will help to show you how to review articles and check the science of experiments.
- Q: Why is the Review Board beneficial and how does it help the SQ?
- A: The SQ needs a peer-review board much like major journals needs peer-reviewers. It just backs up the article that we are publishing. You give the article your stamp of approval in the same way that the Editorial Board does when they accept the article for publication. If it weren't for peer-reviewers, it would take the Editorial Board much longer to review and publish articles, which isn't efficient in a quarterly publication. The Review Board is also a good way to become involved at UCSD and in the Division of Biology. If you are considering applying for a staff position on the SQ, this is a good place to start.
